Trivia Time

Quick, which singer had Top Forty hits with both a cover of a Beatles song and a cover of a Rolling Stones song?

(Or were you thinking of somebody else?)

No, I wasn't thinking of anyone else; I'd love to know if anyone else fits the bill.

She also had hits with covers of the Band ("The Weight"), Simon and Garfunkel ("Bridge Over Troubled Water"), Elton John ("Border Song"), Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell ("You're All I Need to Get By"), and of course Otis Redding, Ben E. King and Dionne Warwick. I bet at some point Casey Kasem called her the Remake Queen.

My thought process before I got to Aretha, btw: Cilla Black, Tiffany, Britney, Otis Redding (who led me directly to her).

I loved her version of Jumpin' Jack Flash; I sat through that godawful Whoopi movie on videotape, saying I'd stop as soon as the song came on. Which it didn't until the closing credits. Grr.

I can't think of anybody else who fits the bill; I'm having a hard time coming up with hit Stones covers (other than Redding, Faithfull, and Ronstadt). Even Bette Midler's "Beast of Burden" didn't hit the top 40.

Devo's version of "Satisfaction" didn't hit the Top 40, either. Melanie supposedly covered "Jigsaw Puzzle"; I bet that was pretty good, although I've never heard it.

If you're interested in covers at all, be sure to tune in to www.secondhandsongs.com.
