And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
But it's all right, it's all right
For we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong
It's dangerous to read too much autobiography in a songwriter's words, but if even Paul Simon, who travels in some pretty fast company, can't find a friend whose dreams are still alive, we're in deep trouble. It's true, Paulie wrote that song back in 1973, but it's no less true today.

Great song. My favorite version is the S&G cut from the Concert in Central Park, 1981.
Excellent song. About the country more than his life, so the friends and dreams are those of society generally, right?
Hard to remember how hip Simon was. Best buds with Lorne Michaels, in "Annie Hall," ruled the charts with "Still Crazy" so hard that he was getting call outs in Marvel Comics.
